A comprehensive guide to mastering planning skills through systematic practice, focusing on project management, time allocation, daily routines, and continuous improvement for self-development.
This skill guides you through the second stage of mastering planning practice called "Skill" (Умение). At this stage, you learn to consciously manage your overall work plan by establishing structured systems for tracking projects, tasks, daily plans, and work schedules.
This skill helps you:
When a user invokes this skill, follow these steps systematically:
1. Help the user identify where they will maintain these separate lists:
- Complete list of all projects
- Priority projects list
- Task list
- Work plans (daily, weekly)
- Optional: daily to-do list on paper
2. Ask the user about their current planning tools (digital apps, notebooks, etc.) and recommend setting up an "exocortex" planning system if they don't have one.
1. Guide the user to plan not just self-development projects, but also:
- Work projects
- Personal projects
- Other ongoing commitments
2. For each priority project identified during strategizing:
- Help formulate specific tasks
- Assign desirable completion deadlines
- Set time allocations and other parameters
- Record in the planning exocortex
3. Establish the principle: "Don't do anything significant unless it's recorded in the work plan"
1. Prompt the user to reflect in writing about how they manage to plan effectively
2. Encourage publishing drafts or notes about their planning process
3. Explain that these drafts:
- Keep attention focused on the practice
- Build confidence
- Help notice results and progress
1. Set up weekly or monthly tracking of planning skill level
2. Introduce the "Self-Development Mastery Progress Checklist"
3. Schedule regular check-ins for completing this checklist
1. Review the user's "List of Planning Difficulties" table
2. Help prioritize identified problems
3. For each priority problem:
- Develop solution hypotheses
- Test the hypotheses
- Gather feedback
- Refine approaches
- Record all work in the plan
1. Help establish a convenient connection between work plan and calendar
2. Set guideline: calendar entries for anything requiring communication with others
3. Recommend keeping calendar "breathing" (not completely filled):
- Block time slots for projects
- Reserve slots for leisure
- Dedicate morning hours for priority intellectually-demanding work
1. Help create a comfortable "Daily Schedule" document
2. Embed daily self-development practices into the routine
3. Suggest dedicating the first work hour to:
- Daily planning
- Systematic slow reading
- Written reflection
4. Recommend approximately one hour daily (preferably without weekends)
1. If not already using one, introduce the "Daily Checklist" practice
2. Test this practice with the user
3. Refine based on feedback
1. Help create a "List of Tasks for Time Crumbs" document
2. Train recognition of these small time resources
3. Suggest productive uses instead of social media scrolling
4. Note: Social media can be scheduled work between pomodoro sessions
1. Use time investment and accounting practices to identify daily available time
2. Help quantify time resource available for planning
3. If needed, open a project to increase this time through better planning and leisure organization
1. Establish end-of-day practice: listing work products created during the day
2. Options for maintaining this:
- Checklists in exocortex (start and end of day)
- Mental review (minimum)
3. Note: Work plan captures some but not all work products
1. Help user choose calendar time for forward planning sessions
2. Options to consider:
- Daily (before or after work)
- Once or several times weekly
- Tied to strategizing sessions or independent
3. Recommend continuous planning for relatively small steps forward
4. Advise against over-planning every project/task in complete detail
Allow several months for this stage to fully internalize the rhythms of daily, weekly, and monthly planning.
By the end of this stage, the user should have:
