A **skill** in D&D 5e represents an area of specialization tied to an ability check. When a character has proficiency in a skill, they add their Proficiency Bonus to ability checks associated with that skill.

When making a skill check:
1. Roll 1d20
2. Add the relevant ability modifier
3. If proficient in the skill, add the Proficiency Bonus
